There is a setting in the mailman list configuration which makes
mailman not send you a message if it notices that your address is
already in the recipient list. Maybe this list isn't using mailman
though?

They must be using reply to all, not only to the list. Unfortunately
this reply-to situation is still an issue because many email apps do
not support mailing lists. I only know of two that do, mutt and
Thunderbird. It is very awesome to have good list support in the
mailer, and in particular the list-reply command is fantastic!
mutt has it built in but Thunderbird needs a plugin:
