Hey,

afaik, libssh2 is used to allow secured file transfert protocol (sftp, for
example) with libcurl
and afaik too, libgcrypt and nettle have the same purposes.

libcurl can use openssl or gnutls.
libssh2 can use openssl or libgcrypt
the next major release of gnutls will use only nettle, and not libgcrypt
anymore. And even now, nettle is preferred over libgcrypt.

So, if I don't want to use openssl at all, I will have to install nettle
(because of gnutls dep of libcurl), and libgcrypt (because of libssh2 dep of
libcurl), which is a bit redundant.

Is there any plan to add nettle support in libssh2 ?

Nobody has expressed any such intention to my knowledge. Feel free to start 
working on it. There's already a fairly good crypto library separation in the 
code.

Nettle is GPL licensed while libgcrypt is LGPL so the license situation for 
users will change as well.

Not that I know of, but I think it would be great addition.  Note that
nettle does not have randomness generation, though, but I'm working on
something to resolve that. ;)

The only decently working version I can think of is to use the remote server 
somehow, and then verify that it worked fine.

You can check whether the connection is up or not by calling poll() or select()
on the socket and looking for an error.  That should cover most situations when
a session has unknowingly been closed.

/etc/bashrc,/etc/profile,/root/.bash_profile. But none of them makes the
added environmental variables to libbssh2 session.

Now, I "source" the environmental variables from a file through libssh2 and
using it in that particular session. But some variables may not be available
to us which will be referred from the target system.

Where I can add those environmental variables so that those variables will
be to the libssh2 sessions?

I am using libssh2 in Windows and the target system is linux which has
CentOS.

The bash manual contains a section entitled "Bash Startup Files" that
documents exactly how it reads files at startup. Note that it acts differently
depending on whether it's invoked as bash or sh.

Hi all,

I have a question regarding error checking.  I'm using libssh2 with a
Qt wrapper to pull files from a remote directory.  Every once in a
while, the files (which are jpegls compressed) fail to uncompress.
We're trying to debug this problem, and I'm wondering if there are any
ways to check to see if a file failed to transfer properly.  Should I
be doing things like CRC checking, or does that happen automatically?
The library is not reporting a failure, and as far as I can see, no
error codes are set, or at least, the downloading code is all working
and continues to pull all files.  Out of a set of 65 files, maybe 1
will be corrupted like this, but it's only happening 1 in 500 or so
files.

Is there any chance that libssh2 could be responsible for this issue?
Is there a verbose checking mode, or is checking for transfer success
automatically done?

Sure, there can be a bug in libssh2 causing this.

As Daniel mentioned, the SSH protocol includes message authentication
for every SSH packet sent, and TCP includes checksumming to make sure
that SSH packets cross the net well.

So the corruption will neccessarily come either from the sending or
the receiving process, assuming that the two filesystems (on sender
and receiver side) are not the cause.

First find out exactly where and how the file has been corrupted;
which offset does the corruption start at and can a pattern for the
corruption be identified. (Some bit consistently wrong, are bytes
missing or are there extra bytes moving the correct data forward or
backward etc. etc.)

In particular collect the above information for several failed runs,
to determine if the problem has some consistent parameters. Ie.
always at the same offset in the file, or always after sending the
same total amount of bytes, or some other pattern.

Then compile a libssh2 with debug messages enabled, and add to your
program:

libssh2_trace(session, LIBSSH2_TRACE_TRANS);

which provides clear text data for packets sent and received. You can
then match the data that is received with the data that libssh2
writes into the buffers that you provide for receiving data.


Note that libssh2 return values work slightly differently from e.g.
read() because libssh2 does not return the packet size until the full
packet has actually been transferred. It could help to also add
buffer debugging into your application, to verify that you see the
exact same data that libssh2 sees. I'm attaching a function I use for
this. Just #include "xxd.c" in file scope and then call xxd(buffer,length);

I'd love to hear more details about this problem. If you've discovered
a problem in libssh2 I think it's important that we fix it. Thanks!

Hello,
I'm experiencing some issues with LIBSSH2_SFTP_HANDLEs. Suddenly in my app I cannot manage anymore to get valid file handles for files I'm 100% sure they exist. And I cannot really track exactly when this happens since it looks sudden to me. Every time it occurs, programmatically disconnecting and re-connecting my ssh session fixes the issue.
Do you have any hint for me?

error: cannot find OpenSSL or Libgcrypt" no matter I specified the
--with-libssl-prefix option or not.
And I checked there is OpenSSL 0.9.7a installed in /usr.
